Our national wildlife refuges contend with many issues.
At Trempealeau:
- The main entrance road often floods
in spring, making access difficult
- Invasive species such as leafy spurge,
purple loosestife and black locust put
heavy pressure on native plants.
- The Refuge is home to a globally important
and endangered ecosystem, the oak savannah, so the pressure from invasive species is even more significant.
- School groups seeking environmental education are turned away
because of inadequate facilities and staffing shortages.
- The Refuge lies in one possible corridor for major electrical lines as
part of the CapX2020 Project.
